Developing a QEP as part of the reaffirmation process is an opportunity and an impetus for Washington and Lee University to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on an issue or issues the institution considers important to improving student learning. The

Mellon Foundation to enhance the educational effectiveness of the University's four-week spring term. February 2009 - A team of Colorado College faculty members visits W&L to share strategies for teaching in an intensive format. (Summary, Itinerary) June 2008 - faculty "Pioneers" meet to discuss first wave of new Spring Term courses to be offered Fall 2009. See Agenda. May 2008 - QEP Leadership Team drafts Mission and Goals for revitalized Spring Term. April 2008 - Provost Aprille appoints QEP Leadership Team to draft the QEP report. March 2008 - President Ruscio and Provost Aprille select Spring Term Revitalization as the topic for the Quality Enhancement Plan. See memo to selection committee. February 2008 - Selection Committee submits QEP Recommendations to President Ruscio, Provost Aprille, and SACS Leadership Team. Five ideas were presented for consideration: Spring-Term Development, Sustainability, Advising, Undergraduate First-Year Seminars, and Service Learning. September 2007. President Ruscio proposes a "Rededication to Teaching and Learning" to the W&L faculty as a part of the strategic plan. May 2007 - W&L launches new strategic plan: "A Liberal Arts Education for the 21st Century" with four key initiatives, including the establishment and enhancement of academic programs that foster learning, engagement and character.
